Groundlings Theatre, Portsea.

BA3 Working with a 'real' client(2015)

The Groundlings theatre is an extraordinary place, but it is essentially a hidden place. To a casual visitor to Portsea, it is all but invisible. The main brief was to develop a design solution that provides income for the Groundlings Theatre, Portsmouth. The scheme needed to create a theatre venue, which is unique, adaptive, allows easy access and gives a buzz atmosphere.

The project introduction involved working closely with a ‘Real’ client, the Artistic Director of the Groundling Theatre Company Richard Stride on a ‘Live’ project. Assisting with the creation of inspiring, creative and beautiful design ideas to revitalise and reinvigorate the historical â€˜Old Beneficial School’.

"Groundlings is a unique Georgian Theatre built in 1784, it is a magical place with secret doors and hidden rooms, it is also said to be haunted by ten friendly ghosts. It was frequented by Queen Victoria and Charles Dickens was nearly born here."
